PHILADELPHIA — Farmers in Jefferson County say financial assistance from the federal government shouldn’t be viewed as a handout, but rather food stability for the community and hopefully a trickle-down effect to local businesses.

The discussion has begun as farmers across the country begin applying for a second round of assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of its Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. The first round, which paid farmers for their production of food in the months of January, February and March, went smoothly and helped make up for dwindling monthly paychecks. For example, if a 70-cow dairy farm produced 150,000 pounds of milk in January, it would be paid $1.20 for every 100 pounds, resulting in a $1,800 payment for that month.

If you are not required to to pay back it is indeed a handout. I am not against helping family owned and run farms receiving a helping hand in these times of a manufactured crises. I am against corporate farms receiving handout payments to spend on luxury homes, vehicles, boats like so many PPP grants and loans were used.

Another article on an agriculture bailout....and as noted by Melanie...the days of the family owned farm run by the father and children are gone for the most part.. never understood why they're treated differently than other businesses...

And yet the federal government is refusing to fund schools. Elise Stefanik hands out money that was approved by Democrats, yet she claims it was all her.

We have bailed out farms and airlines enough.

Money for schools is needed right now.
